A Zettelkasten is a personal tool for thinking and writing that creates an interconnected web of thought. Its emphasis is on connection and not mere collection of ideas.
Martin Grandjean | Digital humanities, Data visualization, Network analysis
I’m a senior researcher and a lecturer in contemporary history and digital humanities at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Switzerland. I hold a PhD from the University of Lausanne and am specialized in network analysis and data visualization. My research focuses on the history of international organizations, the League of Nations and the history of intellectual cooperation. I’m developing methods for the structural analysis of large bodies of international archives and am particularly interested in the graphic and synthetic representation of these massive data. I recently joined the Impresso project where I’m continuing this research, combining it with an analysis of the press and radio.
This website shows, however, that my activity goes beyond these strict categories: I like to experiment with ways to play with data, be it historical, statistical or from social networks. I like to share around these practices of research and experimentation, considering that the digital humanities are a kind of craft, both exciting and imperfect. This site has been a very active blog in the past, it is now mainly a way to talk about my research and centralize my scientific productions, but nothing prevents it from becoming so again one day.
Text+ and the NFDI
As part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the DFG is funding a total of 26 consortia from the four fields of humanities and social sciences, engineering sciences, life sciences and natural sciences. The Text+ consortium is one of six consortia from the humanities, including Berd@NFDI, KonsortSWD, NFDI4Culture, NFDI4Memory, NFDI4Objects. While there are many cross-consortia activities via the NFDI sections, the Text+ consortium is in particularly close dialogue with the humanities and social sciences consortia.

Perzistentní identifikátory (PID) jsou nástroje, které slouží k jednoznačné identifikaci osob, organizací a dalších objektů (např. knih, článků, datových sad) v systému vědecké komunikace.
OpenReview aims to promote openness in scientific communication, particularly the peer review process, by providing a flexible cloud-based web interface and underlying database API.

Auto Archiver is a Python tool to automatically archive content on the web in a secure and verifiable way. It takes URLs from different sources (e.g. a CSV file, Google Sheets, command line etc.) and archives the content of each one. It can archive social media posts, videos, images and webpages. Content can be enriched, then saved either locally or remotely (S3 bucket, Google Drive). The status of the archiving process can be appended to a CSV report, or if using Google Sheets – back to the original sheet.

The IssueCrawler is web network location and visualization software. It consists of crawlers, analysis engines and visualisation modules. It is server-side software that crawls specified sites and captures the outlinks from the specified sites. Sites may be crawled and analyzed in three ways: co-link, snowball and inter-actor. Co-link analysis crawls the seed URLs and retains the pages that receive at least two links from the seeds. Snowball analysis crawls sites and retains pages receiving at least one link from the seeds. Inter-actor analysis crawls the seed URLs and retains inter-linking between the seeds. The Issue Crawler visualises the results in circle, cluster and geographical maps.
